1 Presentation

Assessment :

• The build construction is very good
• The lens is huge on a A6000 but no more than a 100-400mm on a A7 proportionally
• The aperture is quite small being >F5.6 above 100mm 
• AF is fast and precise when there is enough light

Evaluation

• La qualité de construction est très bonne
• L’objectif est très imposant sur un A6000 mais pas plus qu’un 100-400 sur A7 toutes proportions gardées
• L’objectif n’est pas très lumineux on est au delà de F5.5 dès 100mm
• l’autofocus est rapide et précis

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIV with 26Mpix in crop mode

• In the centre results are very good to excellent wide open and become excellent as soon as close the aperture by 1 Stop
• The 70 and 135 mm are the sharpest
• Corners are also Good to very good but one grade lower than the centre in general

An excellent performance for this kind of zoom certainly at this reasonable price point

Les tests on été effectués sur un A7RIV en mode crop sur 26Mpix

• Au centre les résultats sont très bon à excellent à pleine ouverture et deviennent excellent dès que l’on ferme d’un diaphragme
• Les coins sont aussi bons à très bons mais un grade en dessous du centre en général

Une excellente performance pour ce genre de zoom surtout à ce niveau de prix “raisonnable”

2.2 Full frame coverage / couverture du plein format

Just for the fun I tried to use the lens on my A7RIV without crop mode , and I was very surprised to see the lens was covering the full frame. It was with an heavy vignetting and distortion but the image was perfectly usable , it is only at 350mm that you see a black frame appearing

Par curiosité j’ai essayé cet objectif en mode plein format sur mon A7RIV et j’ai été fort surpris de voir que l’objectif couvrait le plein format la plupart du temps (pas tout à fait à 350mm) , avec certes une très forte distorsion et un fort vignettage

2.3 Vignetting / chromatic aberrations / distorsion / flare / sunstars

• Distorsion is pretty huge on the entire range in pincushion
• Vignetting is low
• A correction will be mandatory in post processing but is processed automatically by Lightroom
• Chromatic aberrations are very low
• Flare resistance is Ok but not very good
• Nice sunstars can be obtained

2.3 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare / effets d’étoiles

• La distorsion est énorme en coussinet à toutes les focales
• Le vignettage est faible
• Une correction pour la distorsion sera obligatoire en post traitement mais est automatique grace à Lightroom
• Les aberrations chromatiques sont très faibles
• La résistance au flare est correcte sans plus
• De beaux effets d’étoiles peuvent être obtenus en fermant le diaphragme

2.4 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• Considering the quite slow aperture and zoom range you should use the lens above 135mm to get background blur
• The minimum focusing distance being 1,1m at 70-100mm it is quite difficult to get some nice blur in that range
• Background blur at 135mm and above is very soft and pleasant
• Bokeh circle are ok but not perfectly circular and sometimes they exhibit onion rings
• The color rendering is good but not as nice as the Sony E 16-55mm F2.8 G 

• Vu la faible ouverture et le range du zoom les flous d’arrière plans seront à chercher au delà de 135mm
• La distance minimum de mise au point de 1,1m à 70-100mm rend difficile l’obtention d’un beau flou d’arrière plan à ces focales
• Le flou d’arrière plan à 135mm et au delà est très doux et plaisant
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont correct mais pas parfaitement circulaire et présentent de temps à autres des tranches d’oignons
• Le rendu des couleurs est bon mais pas autant que le Sony E 16-55mm F2.8 G

3 Video

In video we have some nice portraits and background blur but even with OSS getting a stable frame handled is very difficult with that zoom range and you better use a monopod : 350mm x 1.5 = 525mm full frame equivalent , and the slightest movement will be amplified a lot at that focal length

En vidéo on obtient de beaux portraits et un beau flou d’arrière plan mais même avec la stabilisation  optique , garder un cadrage stable est une vrai gageure à main levée, il vaudra mieux utiliser un monopode : à 350mm on est à un équivalent de 525mm en plein format , le moindre mouvement sera très fort amplifié

4 Samples of Photos / Exemples de Photos

• Excellent results in portraits with very nice and soft background blur above 135mm
• Excellent sharpness whether it is static objects/ building /landscape or portraits
• Very noticeable distorsion that require correction

5 Conclusion

The new Sony 70-350mm F4.5-6.3 G OSS (900 euros) is the professional photo zoom we needed for Sony APSC cameras. It is the counterpart of the excellent Sony 100-400 mm on full frame but for 2.5 time less. 

Sharpness is very good to excellent and background blur is very nice at 135mm and above. The optical stabilisation is a must for such telephoto lens and will allow to use it without issue on older Sony APSC cameras like the A6000.

What is surprising is that the lens is almost full frame : the entire frame is covered except at 350mm , although with very important vignetting and distorsion

The lens is not without compromise with a very important distortion for which automatic corrections should alsways be on, a small aperture at 350mm making ISO climbing fast, a medium resistance to flare and a minimum focusing distance a little bit too big

It does not reach the excellence of the Sony E 16-55mm F2.8 G in term of color rendition and bokeh but overall it is an excellent lens for the price and a very versatile telephoto lens

Pros

• Very Good to excellent sharpness thought the range. Sharpness is better than the Sony 70-300G full frame
• Extended Zoom range very suited for Animals or outdoor Sport photography
• Excellent for portrait from a distance (>135mm) with very nice background blur
• Price is reasonable considering range and quality of the lens
• Very fast and efficient AF outdoor (less indoor in low light)
• Very good build quality
• Very good background blur above 135mm
• Low CA
• Low vignetting

Average

• Background blur between 70-100 mm is limited
• Bokeh balls are ok but not perfectly rounded and with some onion rings sometimes
• Resistance to flare is ok but below other lenses of same price
• Size and weight : reasonable for such kind of lens but bigger and heavier than most APSC zoom on E mount
• Limited aperture requiring to use quickly high isos

Cons

• Distorsion is huge
• Min focusing distance is quite big not allowing for proxy photography

Alternatives

• Sony 70-300G full frame : a Good lens but color rendering is a little bit less good and sharpness is less good, but more suite for full frame and less distorsion

 

5 Conclusion

Le nouveau Sony 70-350 F4.5-6.3 G OSS (900 Euros) est le zoom téléphoto pro que nous attendions pour les boitiers APS-C. C’est l’équivalent de l’excellent Sony 100-400 mm mais 2,5x moins cher

Le piqué est très bon à excellent et le flou d’arrière plan est très doux à 135mm et au delà. La stabilisation optique est un must et permettra d’utiliser l’objectif sans aucun souci sur tous les boitiers Sony APSC

Ce qui surprend c’est la couverture quasi plein format de cet objectif (sauf à 350mm) bien qu’avec une distorsion et un vignettage important

L’objectif comporte toutefois des compromis avec une très importante distorsion qui nécessitera des corrections obligatoires, une faible ouverture qui fera grimper les ISOs très rapidement , une résistance au flare moyenne et une distance minimum demise au point assez (trop) importante

L’objectif n’atteint pas l’excellence du Sony E 16-55mm F2.8 G en terme de rendu des couleurs et de bokeh mais globalement c’est un excellent objectif pour son prix et un zoom très polyvalent

Pour

• Très bon à excellent piqué à toutes les focales. Avec un Piqué supérieur au Sony 70-300G plein format
• Plage focale très importante est idéale pour la photo animalière ou sportive en extérieur
• Excellent pour les portraits à une certaines distance (>135mm) avec de très beaux flous d’arrière plans
• Prix raisonnable si l’on tient compte de la qualité de l’objetif
• AF rapide et précis en extérieur
• Beaux flous d’arrière plan au delà de 135mm
• Faibles aberrations chromatiques
• Faible vignettage

Moyen

• Flou d’arrière plan limité entre 70 et 100mm
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont corrects mais pas parfaitement ronds et peuvent parfois présenter des tranches d’oignons
• La résistance au flare est correcte mais moins bonne que des objectif de prix similaire
• La taille et le poids sont corrects pour ce genre d’objectifs mais nettement plus imposante et lourd que les autres zoom APSC sur la monture E
• Ouverture faible faisant rapidement grimper les isos

Contre

• Distorsion très importante
• Distance min de mise ua point très importante et ne permettant pas de proxi photographie

Alternatives

• Sony 70-300G full frame : une bonne optique mais un rendu de couleursun peu moins bon et un piqué inférieur, plus à l’aise sur un capteur plein format moins pixellisé
