1 Presentation
1.1 Specifications

The 40mm is an intermediate focal length between 2 classics the 35mm and the 50mm, so well suited for street photography and full or half body portraits
The CF label stands for Close Focus , as the Zeiss Batis 40mm can focus up to 24cm instead of a traditional 40cm for a 40mm
The lens is in line with the rest of the Zeiss Baths serie
- Very well built
- Beautiful design with the lenshood (plastic) following gently the curve of the lens barrel
- An OLED screen displaying the depth of field in real time
- Dust and moisture resistant
- The lens is made mainly of metal but less qualitative that e.g. the Zeiss Loxia series or Sony GM lenses
- The focusing ring is large and very smooth which make MF very easy combined with the focus peaking but it is also made of a kind of rubber that attracts dust

La focale de 40mm est intermédiaire entre les 2 grands classiques de 35mm et 50mm, elle sera parfaite pour de la photo de rue, un peu plus serré qu’avec un 35mm, et des portraits en pied ou en portrait américain
La dénomination CF est pour Close Focus , elle rappelle que cet objectif peut fair era use au point jusqu’à 24cm au lieu d”un traditionnel 40cm pour un 40mm
L’objectif est en ligne avec le reste de la série Batis
- Très bien construit
- Très beau design avec le pare soleil (en plastique) dans le prolongement de la courbure de l’objectif
- L’écran OLED, qui permet de voir la profondeur de champ réelle en fonction de la distance de mise au point
- Une protection contre la poussière et l’humidité
- Une matière métallique pour le fut moins qualitative que les constructions métalliques des Loxia ou Sony GM
- Un poids relativement léger pour un tel objectif
- Une bague de mise au point souple et facile à manipuler mais sans butée et faite d’une sorte de caoutchouc prenant très vite la poussière

1.2 Autofocus
In photo the AF is fast and totally quiet . It is quite reliable for standard subject but it fails regularly when using the Eye AF (tested on A7RIII with AFC), which is a pity for a lens that could do superb portraits and as I did not had at all the same issue with the Zeiss Batis 85mm F1.8 and the Zeiss Batis 135mm F2.8
NOTE : Zeiss issues a firmware update for the lens but unfortunately it does not correct the eye AF issue
En Photo, l’autofocus est rapide et silencieux. Il est assez fiable pour des sujets standards mais j’ai eu pas mal de raté avec l’utilisation de la fonction d’AF sur les yeux, ce qui fort dommage pour une optique qui pourrait faire de très beaux portraits, problèmes absent avec les Zeiss Batis 85mm F1.8 et le Zeiss Batis 135mm F2.8
NOTE : Zeiss a publié une mise a jour firmware pour cet objectif mais qui ne corrige pas le problème de Eye AF

2 Optical Performances / Performances Photos
2.1 Sharpness / Piqué
The tests were made on a Sony A7RIII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix
- Centre : excellent from F2 to F11 , diffraction at F16
- Corners : very good at F2, excellent from F2.8 to F11, diffraction at F16

2.2 Lens fall off / distorsion / chromatic aberrations / flare
- Lens fall off is very low (1EV) and disappear at F4
- Distorsion is close to 0
- Chromatic aberrations are very low
- Flare is very well controlled
A very good performance , you don’t even need a Lightroom profile
2.2 Vignettage / distorsion / aberrations chromatiques / flare
- Le vignettage est très faible (1EV) et disparait vers F4
- La distorsion est quasi nulle
- Les AC sont très faibles
- Le flare est très bien contrôlé
Une très bonne performance dans l’ensemble , on n’aura même pas besoin de profil de correction Lightroom

2.3 Bokeh / Color Rendition
- Background blur is very soft and creamy
- Bokeh Balls are one of the weak points : wide open they show a 9 shaped form and are not perfectly circular. Internal texture of the Bokeh is good
- Color rendition is excellent with also the typical Zeiss micro contrast, subject are really popping up from the blurry background
2.3 Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs
- Le flou d’arrière plan est très doux et agréable
- Les ronds de Bokeh sont un des points faibles : à pleine ouverture ils ne sont malheureusement pas circulaire et l’on voit les 9 lamelles du diaphragme. La texture des ronds de Bokeh est elle OK
- Le rendu des couleurs est très bon et avec aussi un excellent micro contraste typiques des optiques Zeiss, les sujets se détachent très bien du fond flou avec un bel effet 3D

3 Video
- In video you get some nice blurry background and very good color rendering
- The AF is however sometimes pumping and not as fast as in photo
- There is no aperture ring which imply you will notice any pasture change made on the body
- En video on obtient de beaux flous d’arrière plan et un très bon rendu des couleurs
- L’autofocus n’est toutefois pas parfait, on a parfois un peu de pompage et l’AF n’est pas aussi rapide qu’en photo
- Il n’ya pas de bague d’ouverture ce qui a pour conséquence que tout changement d’ouverture via le boitier see verra

5 Conclusion
The Zeiss Batis 40mm F2 is an excellent lens optically, it has an intermediate focal length between a classical 35mm for street photography and a 50mm more targeting portrait
Using the Zeiss Batis is a pleasure and the results obtained are excellent in term of sharpness , color rendition, blurry background
With firmware V1 : However the autofocus is less performant than all the other Zeiss Batis (which was excellent) with issue with eye AF and very slow AF in video mode
Therefore if your primary usage will be for portraits I will be hesitating due to Eye AF issue (on A7Riii , not tested on A7iii)
With firmware v2 it seems eye AF issues are still there

- Soft and very good blurry background

- Low Light fall off

- Reliability of AF with eye AF (with firmware V1 , solved with firmware V2)

5 Conclusion
Le Zeiss Batis 40mm F2 est un excellent objectif optiquement. C’est une focale intermédiaire entre les classiques 35mm pour la photo de rue et un 50mm visant plutôt les portraits
L’objectif est plaisant à utiliser et les résultats obtenus sont excellents tant en point de vue piqué , rendu des couleurs , flou d’arrière plan
Avec le firmware V1 : Toutefois l’autofocus est moins performant que les autres Zeiss Batis que j’ai pu tester (AF qui était excellant sur ceux ci) avec des problèmes pour l’AF sur les yeux et une certaine lenteur/hesitation en vidéo
Donc si votre usage est centré sur le portraits je serai hésitant à investir dans cette optique à cause des problèmes avec l’AF sur les yeux (sur A7Riii , non testé sur A7iii)
Avec le firmware V2 le problème d’eye AF ne semble pas avoir été résolu

Color rendition looks very similar to Batis 135/2.8.
Thanks for a great and candid review. Was looking a lot to getting this Batis, but the eye-af problem is a deal-breaker for me. Have you heard anything from Sony or Zeiss on whether they are fixing it in a firmware update?
Not aware of any foreseen upgrade for the moment
The reason the bokeh balls are octagonal is that the lens automatically stopped down when focusing at 1m or shorter. The stopping down is linear reaching f/2.8 at 0.4m and f/4 at minimum focusing distance.
In itself this is not unusual , the Leica Q does a similar things. However, Leica was upfront about this at launch and the camera UI displays the actual aperture used for shooting. If you select f/1,7, the UI will display f/2.8 when focusing at less than 0.3m. Making it clear this happening.
Zeiss on the other hand is hiding this behavior. With the Batis, the camera always displays the selected aperture (e.g. f/2) even when it is actually stopping down to f/4. And the selected aperture, not the actual aperture, is stored in the Exif. Plus there was no mention of this “feature” at launch or on the Zeiss product page.
The eye-af and the automatic stop-down are issues for me and wrote to the Zeiss support (if the automatic stop-down can be switched off). They answered very quickly and worte, they will release a software-update during spring.
Have you tried the lens after the software update? I wonder if the update fixed the eye auto focus problem.
it should but I don’t have the lens anymore , so impossible for me to test for the moment
I own the Batis 2/40 CF on firmware 02 and I have used it extensively over the last 7 months. Though the aperture behaviour has been improved with the newer firmware, the eye af is still unreliable at closer focussing distances. It very often front focusses by about 2 cm. By the way, I was also in contact with the Zeiss support regarding the focus problems with the lens. I was told that the behavior was within tolerance and that everything was fine with “reasonable” use. Then probably the stupid customer himself is to blame … So if you need examples for a study on unprofessional customer support, you should definitely contact Zeiss.

I love 40mm lenses since the Rokkor M for the CLE and wished they had done a Loxia version of this lens . . . ( the problem with all the AF Zeiss lenses for Sony seems to be that you can not focus them reliably in MF mode either and eye focus will drive you insane 🙂 P.S: love the portrait of the woman with the missed Eye Af 🙂
Viewing angle diag / horiz / vert = 56° 47° 33° ( hint: it may be helpful to add actual viewing angles to your lens specs ?)
