1 Introduction

1.1 Using an external screen with a Sony A7RIII / Utilisation d’un écran externe pour Sony A7RIII

In this article I will review the various options SmallRig offers to mount “EVF” (Electronic View finder) on a Sony A7RIII and by EVF I mean mainly either an external recorder like the Atomos Ninja V  or a external 5″ screen like the Feelworld Master MA5

When mounting a screen or an external recorder key importants points are

• Ease of mount
• Flexibility to orient the screen
• Sturdiness of the whole set  camera + screen
• Weight and balance of the whole set
• Possibility to add additional accessories like a microphone on your cage set

Dans cet article, je passe en revue les différentes options proposées par SmallRig pour monter un écran externe sur un Sony A7RIII que ce soit un enregistreur externe comme l’Atomos Ninja V ou un écran externe de 5″ du type Feelworld Master MA5

Les points importants lors de l’utilisation d’un écran externe sont

• La facilité de montage
• La flexibilité pour orienter l’écran
• La stabilité de l’ensemble écran + appareil photo
• Le poids et l’équilibre de l’ensemble
• La possibilité de rajouter des accessoires supplémentaire comme un micro

1.2 EVF mounting options / options de montage d’écran externe

So what are the various items we will review  

• SmallRig 1903 EVF Mount with NATO Rail : for use with cage and top handle, 263g
• SmallRig 2174 Monitor Mount with Arri Locating Pins : for use with cage, 70g
• SmallRig 761 Cold Shoe to 1-4″ Threaded Adapter  with ballhead: for on camera use, 70g
• SmallRig 2119 Rod Clamp for Zhiyun Crane2-Crane v2: for Gimbal, 94g

Those will be used together with some accessories

• SmallRig 1135 Double End Ball Head with Cold Shoe and Thumb Screw, 90g
• SmallRig 2044 Cold Shoe Extension, 10g

Those allow some extensions to be able to combine screen and microphone without any conflicts

We will use them mainly on the

• SmallRig 2087  cage for A7RIII (270g) ,reviewed here
• SmallRig 2218 Left Side Grip for L-bracket (304 g with L grip)
• SmallRig 2238 Arca QR Half Cage for Sony A7R III-A7 III-A7 II-A7R II-A7S II, 330g

Les dispositifs testés dans cet article sont

Ils permettront de combiner l’écran externe avec par exemple un écran sans que ceux ci ne se gênent l’un l’autre

• SmallRig 2218 Grip gauche pour grip en L  (304 g avec le grip en Lp)
• SmallRig 2238 Demi cage avec plateau Arca QR pour Sony A7R III-A7 III-A7 II-A7R II-A7S II, 330g

1.4 SmallRig : Choice & quality / Choix et qualité

As usual with SmallRig , the choice is very large and the various cage, L grip, plate, accessories… can be combined to fit all your needs and dreams

Quality is very good with very well designed items , quality aluminium alloy and perfect measurement

Comme d’habitude avec SmallRig, le choix est très large et de très nombreuses combinaisons sont possibles entre les différentes cage et accessoires pour satisfaire la plupart de vos besoins

La qualité de fabrication est très bonne, les éléments sont biens conçus et bien usinés

1.5 Screens used / Ecran utilisés

I have 2 external screens

• Atomos Ninja V : which is an external recorded with a SSD disk of 512Go.Official specifications are 5″ screen , but in reality we are at 6,14″

• • Can be fixed from top or bottom but not from the side
• • 1000 nits (very bright)

• Feelword Master MA5 : 5″ monitoring screen ,Very light  = 142g

• • Can also be fixed from bottom or right

Both accept NP-F Sony compatible batteries or some Canon ones

J’ai 2 écran externes :

2 SmallRig 1903 EVF Mount with NATO Rail

The SmallRig 1903 EVF mount with Nato Rail is maybe the most robust and advanced Screen support proposed by Smallrig

It’s aim is to be fixed on a Top handle , itself fixed on a cage

The cage kit includes 

• A7RIII Cage 2087 : 270g
• NATO Rail 1409 : 38g
• NATO Handle (Rubber) 2005 : 183g

The 1903 EVF mount give a great flexibility in term of distance vs the top handle , orientation  of the screen

It is really sturdy when fixed, the screen is positioned with sufficient space from the cage to allow to fix a microphone on the cage without having it in conflict with the screen

This combinaison will be ideal when used for low height video carrying the camera by the top handle or on a tripod to have space between all elements

However it will be a little bit too big , heavy and unbalanced  is it just hold the cage in your hands , in this case the SmallRig 2174 Monitor Mount with Arri Locating Pins, will be more appropriate

Below setup is : cage (270 + 38 + 183g)  + support (263g)  + Atomos (30 + 435 + 203g) = 1422g + the camera and lens

Le SmallRig 1903 support d’écran avec rail Nato est sans doute la solution la plus robuste et la plus avancées proposée par SmallRig

Il est conçu pour être fixé sur une poignée supérieure , elle même fixée d’une cage

Le kit de cage utilisé inclus

• A7RIII Cage 2087 : 270g
• NATO Rail 1409 : 38g
• NATO Handle (Rubber) 2005 : 183g

Le Support d’écran 1903 donne une grand flexibilité en terme d’orientation de l’écran et permet d’éloigner l’écran de la cage qui se trouve libre d’accueillir d’autres accessoires (ex micro, enregistreur son.

L’ensemble est très solide et ne bouge pas du tout même si on le secoue dans tous les sens (voir la vidéo ci dessus)

Ce sera la combinaison idéale pour des prises de vue basse en tenant l’ensemble par la poignée supérieure ou sur un trépied

Pour un usage avec les mains sur la cage du boitier, l’ensemble sera par contre un peu trop gros et déséquilibré et il vaudra mieux se tourner vers le SmallRig 2174 Monitor Mount with Arri Locating Pins, qui conviendra beaucoup mieux

Le kit suivant comprend  : cage (270 + 38 + 183g)  + support (263g)  + Atomos (30 + 435 + 203g) = 1422g + le boitier et l’objectif

The microphone can not be fixed to the standard cold shoe on the cage that is on the right as it enter in conflict with the SmallRig 1903 EVF mount. I had therefore to use the SmallRig 2044 Cold Shoe Extension to put the microphone on the left

If you mount the SmallRig 1903 with the Nato rail on the left instead of the right , this should free up the space and you can then use the cage cold shoe

De la façon dont je l’ai monté la présence du SmallRig 1903 empêchait le montage d’un micro sur le griffe flash situé à droite de la cage . J’ai donc utilisé le SmallRig 2044 Cold Shoe Extension pour pouvoir rajouter une extension à gauche et y monter le micro

En montant le SmallRig 1903 avec le rail Nato à gauche libère l’espace de la griffe situé à droite de la cage et on peut monter un micro directement

3 SmallRig 2174 Monitor Mount with Arri Locating Pins

The Smallrig 2174 monitor mount with Arri locating pins is both very small, light ans very sturdy

It is very versatile and can be combined with various cage or even L bracket as you will see below

Le Smallrig 2174 support d’écran avec pointe ARRI est à la fois petit , léger et très solide. Il est très polyvalent et peut être utilisé  avec différentes cages ou poignée en L

3.1 With SmallRig 2087 cage for A7RIII

The Smallrig 2087 cage for A7III/A7RIII  offers 2possible positions for ARRI accessories : central or left

La cage  Smallrig 2087 pour A7III/A7RIII permet de monter un accessoire Arri soit au centre soit à gauche

• Cage (270g)  + support (70g)  + Atomos (30g +  435 + 200g) = 1005g + SonyA7RIII +lens + microphone, 
• Cage (270g)  + support (70g)  + Feelworld MA5 (30g +  145 + 90g) = 605g (with smallest EV battery) + Sony A7RIII+  lens + microphone

On the left

Putting the EVF support on the left allow to fix easily a microphone on the right, but then the weight is a little bit unbalanced if you hold an accessories like an Atomos recorder with medium battery (665g) . If you mount the Feelworkd screen (265g) , the balance is right

En utilisant la position Arri à gauche on peut facilement utiliser la griffe à droite pour un flash, mais le poids de l’Atomos (665g) déséquilibre l’ensemble. Avec un simple écran 265g il n’ y a aucun problème

If you fix it centrally you have a better balance but you can’t fix anymore directly the microphone you need to use some articulated arm or cold shoe extension to fix a microphone

Si vous fixer l’Atomos au centre on a un bien meilleur équilibre mais son volume empêche la fixation du micro sauf à utiliser un bras articulé ou une extension de griffe pour éloigner le micro de l’enregistreur

3.2 SmallRig 2238 Arca QR Half Cage for Sony A7R III-A7 III-A7 II-A7R II-A7S II

The Smallrig 2238 Half cage for A7RIII (330g) is the very good comprise between ease of handling and expansion capabilities

• It allow to fix sturdily many accessories thanks to 2 Arri places
• • 1 nato rail on the left
• • Numerous holes
• 1 Arca Swiss plate is built in to easily remove the body from the cage and fix it directly on a tripod with Arca Swiss fixation
• You don’t need to unmount the lens to slot the camera + lens into the cage (you need to do so for the full cage)
• You can use the camera right grip

La demi cage Smallrig 2238 (330g) pour A7RIII est un très bon compromis en terme de maniabilité et de possibilité d’extension

• Il permet de fixer très solidement de nombreux accessoires grâce à
• • 2 emplacements Arri
• • Un rail Nato sur la gauche
• • De nombreux emplacement pour vis
• Le boitier se monte sur un plateau Arca Swiss detachable de la cage pour montage sur trépied
• La conception en demi cage permet d’insérer le boitier avec l’objectif sans devoir démonter ce dernier comme avec la cage complète
• Utilisation possible du grip natif du boitier A7RIII

Like for the full cage , the Smallrig 2174 monitor mount with Arri locating pins can be fixed centrally or on the left

Comme pour la cage complète, le Smallrig 2174 support d’écran avec pointes Arri peut se fixer sur la gauche ou en position centrale

Camera can be easily released an put on a tripod (here with QR 501PL Manfrotto plate , but model 2238 is with Arca Swiss)

3.3 SmallRig 2218 Left Side Grip for L-bracket

The Smallrig 2218 left side grip is a complement to the Smallrig 2122  L bracket for A7RIII that I had tested here

If you don’t need to put a lot of accessories the Left side grip for the L-Bracket of A7RIII is a very good option

It adds a very nice and ergonomic grip on the left and you can hold your cameras with 2 hands without adding cage , wooden handle etc, so a very light option

The grip has a ARRI rosette mount so you can fix  the ARRI EVF mount holder

With an Atomos Ninja V, the width is too large to allow to fix a mic on the camera hot shoe, you need to use the SmallRig 1135 Double End Ball Head with Cold Shoe and Thumb Screw, to put the mic a little bit on the right

If you use the Feelworld Master MA5 you can fix directly your ic on the hoshoe

Pay also attention that a rigid micro HDMI cable can not be plugged to the camera and get sufficient space in the hole of the left grip. I had to order a angled micro HDMI cable (90° left oriented) or 270 down oriented to get it through and fix the left grip

Le poignée de gauche Smallrig 2218 est un complément au plateau en L Smallrig 2122  pour  A7RIII que j’avais testé ici

Si vous ne devez pas mettre beaucoup d’accessoires alors cette poignée est une très bonne option , elle ajoute un grip a gauche très ergonomique et permet de saisir le boitier des deux mains : le grip du boitier à droite  et cette poignée grip à gauche

Cette poignée comporte une monture ARRI rosette qui vous permet de fixer le porte écran SmallRig 2174

Avec un Atomos Ninja V , la largeur est trop importante que pour permette la fixation d’un micro sur la griffe flash  et il faudra utiliser la double tête SmallRig 1135 avec griffe et déplacer le micro vers la droite

Si vous utiliser un écran type Feelworld Master MA5 , aucun problème on pourra monter le micro sur la griffe flash

Attention au cable HDMI utilisé , celui que j’avais de base était droit et rigide et il n’y avait pas assez de dégagement (même si la poignée est creuse) pour faire passer le câble sans forcer. J’ai donc acheté un cable coudé (1 orienté gauche et un orienté bas) qui m’a permit de positionner la poignée sans forcer sur le cable

4 SmallRig 761 Cold Shoe to 1-4″ Threaded Adapter

The SmallRig 761 Cold Shoe to 1-4″ Threaded Adapter, is very inexpensive (6 euros) and allow to easily fix on the flash hotshoe of your camera a screen or an external recorder

Sturdyness is there but the balance when using the external recorder and an intermediate battery like the NP-F750 was not ideal

For this setup I prefer to use the lightest battery NP-F550 (90g), even if I need to change the battery more often

No possibility to add a microphone here

• Support (70g)  + Atomos (30g + 435 + 90g) = 895g  + A7RIII+ lens 
• Support (70g)  + Atomos (30g + 145 + 90g) = 335g  + A7RIII+ lens 

La rotule bille SmallRig 761 avec support griffe est très bon marché (6 euros) et permet de tier aisément et directement sur la griffe flash un écran externe ou un enregistreur externe

L’assemblage tient bien mais on se sent plus à l’aise avec un simple écran plutôt que avec un lourd enregistreur

Dans les 2 cas on favorisera les plus petites batteries les NP-F550 (90g)

Pas de possibilité de rajouter un micro ici

• Support (70g)  + Atomos (30g + 435 + 90g) = 895g  + A7RIII+ lens 
• Support (70g)  + Atomos (30g + 145 + 90g) = 335g  + A7RIII+ lens 

5 SmallRig 2119 Rod Clamp for Zhiyun Crane2-Crane v2

The Smallrig 2119 Rod clamp is a very flexible plate for the Zhiyun Crane 2 that can be positioned at 4 different places

When using a external screen/ recorder with a gimbal it is best to fix this one to the gimbal and not to the camera, not to add an extra weight to compensate

Lors de l’utiliser d’un écran externe avec une gimbal il vaut mieux fixer celui-ci sur le manche plutôt que de rajouter du poids  à compenser

When fixed in the intermediate position below the Crane controls you can fix the external screen on the left of the plate

Fixé en position intermédiaire en dessous des boutons du Crane 2 , on peut y fixer un écran externe

The Smallrig 1135 double End Ball Head with cold shoe screw 1135 , that you can see on the picture above is a little bit short and just OK to support the Atomos Ninja V

Le Smallrig 1135 bras avec double tête que l’on voit monté sur la photo ci dessus est un peu court en longueur et peine à supporter le poids de l’Atomos Ninja V

The Smallrig 1497 Articaliting Rosette Arm (7″)  is definitely too weak for the weight of the Atomos, with the Feelword Master MA5 is is OK

Le Smallrig 1497 Articulating Rosette Arm (7″)  est définitivement trop faible pour supporter le points de l’Atomos mais il serait encore bon pour un simple écran comme le Feelword Master MA5 is is OK

However for best stability I think I will order the Smallrig 2115 Magic Arm with double ballheads (Arri locating pins and 1/4″ screw)

Pour une meilleure stabilité mieux vaut prendre Le Bras magique Smallrig 2115 avec double système de fixation (Arri et vis 1/4)

I also realized that my HDMI to micro HDMI cable of 30cm that was perfect for the cage was too short and rigid for the Gimbal. I will therefore order a 50 cm version

J’ai aussi remarqué que mon cable micro HDMI de 30 cm , parfait dans les autres montages était ici trop court. J’ai donc commandé une version de 50cm

There are plenty of holes to fix additional accessory but I preferred to add an additional handle at the base of the Crane 2 to have a better stability and hold the gimbal with 2 hands

This additional handle allowed to add the microphone

I directly connected the mic to the input in the Atomos to avoid a 2nd cable to the camera

Il y a de nombreux trous pour fixer des accessoires complémentaires , mais j’ai préféré rajouter une poignée à la base du Crane 2  qui m’a permet d’avoir un bon équilibre à deux mains et qui m’a servie de support micro

J’ai directement connecté le microphone à la prise “audio in” de l’Atomos

6 Conclusion

For each configuration (with top handle, with cage, with L bracket, with only the camera, with a Gimbal…) , Smallrig has the right EVF mount accessory that combine very good quality, usability & sturdiness

My preferred one is the SmallRig 2174 Ari locating pin for its versatility (can be used with Cage, half cage, L bracket) and it stays compact and light

6 Conclusion

Pour chaque configuration : poignée supérieure, avec cage, plateau en L , Appareil photo seul, Gimbal….SmallRig nous propose une solution de qualité pour monter un écran externe qui allie solidité , flexibilité et ergonomie

Mon support préféré étant le SmallRig 2174 avec fixation Arri qui allie compacité , légèreté et stabilité et qui peut être utilisé sur une cage complète, une demi cage et sur la poignée gauche du plateau en L
