1 Presentation

1.1 Specifications

• Weight : 1180 g
• Price : 1600 euros
• Length : 152mm
• Filter : no filter possible

The build construction is excellent , the lens has a very large rubbered focus ring 

The lens hood is not removable due to the curvature of the front lens

• Diaphragme à 9 lamelles
• Pas de protection officielle contre la poussière et l’humidité

La qualité de construction est excellente, l’objectif a une large bague de mise au point

Le pare soleil est inamovible due à la courbure de la lentille frontale

1.2 Autofocus

In photo, the Autofocus is fast but not very efficient

• For distant subject using AFC cause some hunting and you need to be in AF-S to have it reliable
• For medium distance subject : 2-4m the AFS was not working and did not focus at all I had to switch to AFC to make it work !

In video is worked fine for aperture grater than F5.6 but using it at aperture like F8-F11 with bright sun , the AF was hunting before stabilization : see the Video section to see a sample of it

It is a pity that Sigma make such wonderful optics in term of sharpness , distorsion … but that AF is very often problematic.

En photo , l’autofocus est rapide mais sa fiabilité laisse à désirer

• Pour des sujets distant , l’AF-C patine et il vaut mieux utiliser l’AF-S
• Pour les sujets a distance moyenne : 2-4m , l’AF-S n’arrivait pas à accrocher et j’ai du passer en mode AF-C pour qu’il accroche !

En vidéo , cela fonctionne bien pour autant que l’on utilise une ouverture plus lumineuse que F5.6 , à F8 et F11 j’ai eu des phénomènes de pompage en passant de F1.8 à F8 avant une stabilisation au bout de quelques secondes

Il est vraiment dommage que Sigma produisent des objectifs superbes optiquement mais que la partie AF soit souvent problématique

• For landscape it was the opposite ! AF-S reliable , AFC not reliable
• Pour le paysage c’était l’opposé AFS fiable, AFC non fiable

1.3 Handling / Maniement

The Sigma 14mm F1.4 is a very big and heavy lens , as heavy as the Sigma 85mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art (1.2kg) but surprisingly it is much more balanced and more easy to handle 

Ce Sigma 14mm F1.4 est très imposant et lourd (1.2 kilo) , autant que le Sigma 85mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art mail il est mieux balancé

2 Optical performances / Performances optiques

2.1 Sharpness / Piqué

The tests were made on a Sony A7RIII, the most demanding sensor with 42 Mpix

• Centre : Very Good at F1.8 , Excellent from F2.8 to F11 , diffraction as of F16
• Corners : good at F1.8-F2.8 , very good at F4-F5.6, Excellent à F8-F11, diffraction at F16

For near subject at F1.8 corners will be well below the centre sharpness due to field curvature but if you focus on the corners you reach already good level at f1.8. This field curvature is pretty common with fast wide angle

For distant subject outdoor corners are really sharp see below

Les tests on été effectués sur un A7RIII, le plus exigeant de la gamme Sony avec ses 42Mpix

• Centre : Très bon à F1.8 , Excellent à partir de F2.8 jusque F11 , diffraction à partir de F16
• Coins : Bon à F1.8 et F2,8, Très Bon à F4-F5.6, excellent de F8 à F11 , diffraction à partir de F16

Pour les sujets proches, les coins seront nettement en dessous du centre à cause de la courbure de champ caractéristique des ultra grand angles. Si l’on fait le point dans les coins on obtient déjà un grade bon à F1.8. Pour les sujets plus distants (= utilisation normale d’un 14mm) on n’a pas ce problème et les coins sont très bons à F1.8

2.2 Lens Fall off / chromatic aberrations / distorsion / Flare / Coma

• Vignetting is important wide open but  disappear around F4
• Distorsion is small but visible

There is a Lightroom lens profile that will correct the lens fall off and distorsion

• Chromatic aberrations are very low 
• Flare resistance is very good with no loss of contrast 

Coma : I could not really test it as I don’t do astrophotography but all report of the Canon/Nikon version mention coma is very low with this lens and that the lens is well suited for astrophotography

For Astrophotography  one of the biggest concerns for any lens is how the stars look in the corners when shooting wide open. Coma or comatic aberration occurs when off axis points of light, like stars, are not sharp point but more straight line

2.2 Vignettage / aberrations chromatiques / distorsion / flare / coma

• Le vignettage est important à pleine ouverture mais disparait vers F4
• La distorsion est  faible

Lightroom dispose d’un profil pour cet objectif qui corrige automatiquement la distorsion et le vignettage

• Les d’aberrations chromatiques sont très faibles
• Très bonne résistance au flare , pas de perte de contraste

Coma : je n’ai pu tester le coma de cet objectif car je ne fais pas d’astrophotographic et je n’ai eu l’objectif que 1 jour. Les rapports des autres testeurs en monture Canon / Nikon mentionne qu’il est très bon pour l’astrophotographie (voir ici)

Le coma est un phénomène qui fait que les étoiles ne sont plus des points mais plutôt des trainées lumineuses quand on s’approche des coins de l’image

2.3 Bokeh  / Color Rendition – Bokeh / Rendu des Couleurs

• The background blur is very nice for an ultra wide angle , we get smooth blurry background at close distance
• Bokeh Balls are good, perfectly circular with no onion rings 
• Color rendition is very good 

The F1.8 Aperture allow to be really creative with such a wide angle

• Le flou d’arrière plan est très bon pour un ultra grand angle, on obtient des fonds doux à proche distance
• Les ronds de Bokeh sont très bons, parfaitement circulaires
• Le rendu des couleurs est très bon

L’ouverture de F1.8 permet d’avoir des photos créatives qu’on ne peut réalisé avec les optiques ouvrant à F2.8

3 Video

Autofocus : the AF is hunting when changing the from a large aperture eg F2.8 to a smaller one like F8 before stabilizing 

Aperture control : to change the aperture you will need to use the body control, so this will be quite noisy

Autofocus : l’AF pompe lorsque l’on change d’une grande ouverture vers une faible ouverture ex de F2.8 à F8

Contrôle de l’ouverture : Pour changer d’ouverture il faudra passer par les molettes sur le boitier ce qui est bruyant

5 Conclusion

The Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art (1600 euros) is an excellent lens optically for a wide angle with the fastest aperture available for that focal length

Centre sharpness is excellent , and corners are already good wide open and become progressively excellent

The Sigma 14mm F1.8 is certainly the best 14mm available in the market in term of sharpness , bokeh and color rendition, and it low coma makes it suited for astrophotography

The F1.8 allows for some unique effect of background blur for a wide angle that has no equivalent

The only issue is the capricious Autofocus and the price tag (1600 euros), one of the most expensive of the Art line

Alternatives

• Samyang 14mm F2.8 ED AS IF UMC – (300 euros) – Manual lens , average at F2.8 , very good after
• Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 FE : (650 Euros) -average at F2.8 , very good after
• Venus Optics : Laowa 15mm F2: (850 euros) , Good at f2 , very good after , some coma in astrophotogrpahy
• Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G: (2000 euros) very good performer but much smaller aperture
• Voigtländer 15mm F4.5 Super Wide Heliar Aspherical III : (700 euros) much smaller, good performer but manual and very small aperture

but none of the above can match the optical quality of the Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM art

5 Conclusion

Le Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art (1600 euros) est une excellente optique pour un ultra grand angle avec une ouverture inégalée à cette focale

Le piqué au centre est excellent et les coins sont déjà bons à pleine ouverture et deviennent progressivement excellent

Le Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM Art est certainement le meilleur 14mm du marché en terme de piqué , de bokeh et de rendu des couleurs , de plus il présente un coma faible ce qui le rend idéal pour de l’astrophotographie

L’ouverture de F1.8 permet des effets de flou d’arrière plan inédit en ultra grand angle

Les seuls problèmes sont l’autofocus capricieux et son prix : 1600 euros , un des plus cher de la gamme Art

Alternatives

• Samyang 14mm F2.8 ED AS IF UMC – (300 euros) – optique manuelle, moyen à F2.8 , très bon après
• Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 FE : (650 Euros) – moyen à F2.8 , très bon après
• Venus Optics : Laowa 15mm F2: (850 euros) , Bon à F2 , très bon après , coma présent en astrophotographie
• Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G: (2000 euros) une très bonne optique , un AF fiable, mais une ouverture nettement plus réduite
• Voigtländer 15mm F4.5 Super Wide Heliar Aspherical III : (700 euros) beacon plus compact , bonnes performances, mais Manuel et petite ouverture

mais aucun ne peut égaler la qualité optique du Sigma 14mm F1.8 DG HSM art
